Top 5 Bead Colors for Salmon & Steelhead Fishing
Once fall rolls around and the salmon start making their way into the tributaries, they will start the spawning process and begin dropping millions of eggs throughout the system, and the steelhead and brown trout won’t be too far behind. They will enter the tribs and begin feeding heavy on salmon eggs. This time of year, is great for fishing beads which are meant to replicate salmon eggs.
Here's my top 5 colors that deserve a place in your bead box for success all season long.
- Orange Clear-
This color is very natural looking and is a great early season color to throw before fishing pressure picks up and the fish get smart. This is a great color that mimics both salmon and steelhead eggs. It resembles a fresh egg straight out the fish and is an easy, tasty little treat.

- Glow Roe-
Glow Roe is a great producer for me on tributaries that get good salmon returns. You can fish this color through the entirety of when the salmon are in the creeks. It closely resembles a fresh egg, but still has a slight cloudy-ish tint to it, which also resembles a flushed-out egg that’s been in the system for a while now. I’ve had really good days on brown trout with this color and have also had many kings bite this color.

- Pink-
Pink is one of the colors that always just flat out works. Clear water, green water, dirty water, it’s always one you should have with you. Pink is my #1 best producing steelhead color. The fish are seeing a lot of more traditional colors going past their face all day, so switching it up and throwing bright that stands out that they haven’t seen a whole lot of will a lot of the time entice a bite.

- Chartreuse-
Chartreuse is a muddy water killer! After some rainfall or snowmelt and the tributaries rise and get some color to them, throw chartreuse. The fish won’t be able to see natural colors as well, so going bright and getting it by their face will give them something to see amidst the water color. Chartreuse will work in clear water too and show the fish something that pops out.

- Peach Fuzz-
After the eggs have been in the system for a while and haven’t been eaten yet, they start to die off and will start to wash out and begin turning more white. This is a good time to capitalize on this and throw some dead egg colors, which is where peach fuzz comes in. This is a great late season color that mimics a washed out egg. Late fall/early winter, this color will get bit!

Another thing to consider while bead fishing is what size bead to use. They range anywhere from 6 millimeters all the way up to 20 millimeters. Usually, I wont go any larger than a 12 millimeter, and that is when I’m fishing some very dirty water. Most of the time fishing in average water conditions, I will start with an 8 millimeter bead. If the water has a bit of stain to it, Ill opt for a 10 millimeter. If water is really low and really clear and fish are being spooky, Ill downsize and throw a 6 millimeter bead. Just coordinate bead size with given water conditions and this will give you success!
We have a large variety and many other color of beads here at Tackle Shack, these are just a few of my confidence colors that I’ve proven to give great days on the water!
